I’m breaking the cycling out of the Retrospective, because I want to. Seriously, there were so many cycling articles in the ii News this year, you’d think it was a cycling blog. Sorry to all those who read it and don’t care… 😉
With one and a bit days left in 2016, I’ve ridden 6,645 km for the year. I might have a few more kilometers in me today and tomorrow, but probably will be under 6,700. That’s a healthy bump from last year and the years before that.
But it could have been better. I had two layoffs where I didn’t ride at all, and for some reason my record of commuting via bike this year was worse than in the past.
The list of notable cycling stories for the year was long:
- Bike Overhaul Course
- Test Riding Day
- New Bike
- First Outdoor Ride of the Year
- Crash, Broken Pinky, Back on the Horse
- First Super Long Bike Ride (outdoors) (Tammy and Mary)
- Busy Summery Saturday (Family bike ride to downtown)
- Na Na Na Na Na Na Leader
- MEC Spring Ride (wet)
- Graphics for the Roubaix
- All the way there… (Tammy rode to/from work)
- 2016 MEC Summer Century Ride
- Thor’s not a cycling fan
- Bow Cyclists Family Ride and Big Hill Springs Hike
- Tour de Victoria, 2016 Edition
- Tour of Alberta Stage Two
- My First 100 Mile Ride
- Volunteering at a Cyclocross Race
- A Mid-Fall Ride (Glenmore w/ Kurt)
- Ridiculously Nice Weather (Ian, Nov. 5)
- Guinea Pig
I think the defining story for the year was being asked by Bow Cycle to be a ride ambassador for the club. It really shaped my riding season, and directly resulted in my new bike. I’ve met more people through the club, and had new experiences, like my first 140, and then 160 km rides.
Tammy has picked up her cycling again this year, with some longer rides with Mary. Ian has continued to impress with his willingness to ride a long way with me.
Updated December 31st
My official total for the year is 6691 km. I rode yesterday and today, but I focused on climbing, not distance.
