Done (Functional)

The stress is bleeding off now. Today we faced four major unknowns head on and successfully overcame them. The first was how to mount the vanity. There were two ways to approach it: floating and with legs. The vanity is made to attach to the wall, but we bought two legs for it just in case. The issue was how to mount it rigidly to the wall, since the studs were in the wrong place (of course). The solution was to cut open the drywall and mount a couple of 2x4s between the studs and then mount the vanity to that:

The next big thing was figuring out the plumbing under the sink. Because the vanity has two pull-out drawers, the drain takes a sharp bend and all of the pipes and hoses huddle close to the wall. The stressor there was having to cut the pipes to the right length to make it all work, especially the 1.5″ drain pipe coming out of the wall. Screw that one up and it’s time to call a plumber!

The next was hanging the medicine cabinet/mirror. It was sort of like the vanity, in that it was big and heavy, but a backing sheet of 1/4″ plywood and it was okay too. We thought we were home free at that point, with really only the toilet to mount, but wouldn’t you know it: the tiles meant the floor was higher relative to the drain, and so the wax ring didn’t get depressed when I put the toilet on. So second flush and there was water everywhere. One more trip to Home Depot and there was a flange extender in place and the toilet mounted fine.

  1. this is just weird! I checked your site yesterday and there was nothing new! BUT TODAY – WOW! Bathroom looks great. Live and learn [water on floor]. I hope you are pleased with the results. Mom

    1. Yes, live and learn. That seems to be the lesson of the moment. 🙂 Once the flange was extended above the level of the tiles, the experience of smooshing the wax ring during installation was dramatically different. Now I know.

It’s so nice to have the ensuite bathroom back. Didn’t realize how much we would miss it.

    1. Yes, the cabinet has mirrors on the inside and outside of the doors. Lots of storage now for Tammy’s stuff and my stuff.
