Ian’s First Video Game

Sometimes, you have to just sit back and be amazed. In this case, both with the technology and Ian’s ability. Last night, when Tammy and I were out having dinner at the GEOS Christmas Party, Ian set about creating a video game.

He made it with Scratch, a free programming environment that it designed to teach kids programming skills. He was introduced to it through school, and I’d heard him mention it, but I really hadn’t paid it too much attention. Back in the day, Scratch was a SmallTalk environment that you had to install on your computer. I’d fiddled with it, but it was too weird for me.

Now, it’s an environment that runs in your web browser, and uses a visual metaphor for programming constructs like loops, conditionals and variables.

Ian now wants to make some changes to improve his game. I think I want to give it a try, too. It looks like a lot of fun.

So proud of Ian for doing this.
