Ian’s Mystery Back Ailment

Poor Ian. Something’s wrong with his back/hips and as the tree said to the lumberjack: “I’m stumped!” 🌲

It started Friday night. He complained that his hips were aching. He’d had a really active gym class and Tammy figured he’d strained something. Then on Saturday, he was showing signs of being sick: chills and lethargic, as well as this pain. I then chalked it up to a round of the flu. I’ve had some real fun with body aches and the flu in the past. He was in tears from time to time, which isn’t out of character when he’s sick.

But on Sunday, he seemed better and I thought the hip pain would resolve itself. But as nighttime approached, it got worse and worse. He was awake in the night in tears several times, and Tammy called 811 (Alberta Health). She took the day off work to take him to the doctor. The doctor got an X-ray scheduled, but didn’t have any real insight into the pain. But by mid-afternoon, things had reached a breaking point:

It was 10 o’clock before they arrived home. Nothing more to add, either. The doctors were still of the opinion that it was a muscle pull. They suggested to move around as much as possible.

So Ian went to school today, and I worked from home, waiting for the inevitable call from the school saying that Ian needed to come home. That call came just after one. So Ian’s home and resting. Not sure what the plan is for tomorrow.

  1. Today was the ultrasound of his bladder and kidneys. The technician said everything looked normal. We should have the results by Friday. Hopefully by then the pain will have subsided some. If not, I’m thinking massage/physio.
