Stripping the Deck

Last Saturday, we started the task of re-coating the deck. It’s been on the “honey-do” list for at least a year, as the existing coating was peeling rather badly in places.

Last Saturday, I applied paint stripper to it, and gave ‘er with the big scraper. I wasn’t particularly happy with the result, but it certainly beat the prospect of having to sand it all off.

The next step in the instructions was “spot-sand” where the stripping wasn’t complete. Well, once you start something, you might as well do a good job of it. Tammy and I started sanding in earnest, only to run out of time on Sunday evening.

The weather turned this week, and rain dampened our expectations of getting any further. We took the time to play a game of Monopoly before lunch today. Tammy was the eventual winner. It was down to she and Miranda exchanging massive amounts of cash for rental of properties with hotels on them.

But then the sky cleared, and the combination of direct sunlight and wind dried the deck and Tammy and I finished the job.

Now to try to judge the weather, which is pretty erratic right now. We need to apply the wood cleaner, and then let it dry, and then spot-stain on the cracks, and then let that dry, and then two coats at least 4-6 hours apart. Hopefully without rain in the mix. I doubt this will happen tomorrow. Perhaps next weekend will co-operate.
