Planes, Trains and Boats

Not quite the same as the John Hughes film, but it had some shades of the same situation. Yesterday, I had to travel to Vancouver to meet with another developer and attend another meeting in the afternoon. I had reservations on the float plane for the trip there and back. If everything went well, I’d even catch my usual transit bus home.

Well, the morning went okay. We left late and were informed that the weather was rough in Vancouver. In Victoria, it was just partly cloudy and calm. Sure enough, it really got exciting over the Gulf Islands. The woman in the seat in front of me had to use her barf bag. I was okay, if not exactly looking forward to my afternoon flight. The weather in Vancouver cleared up over the course of the day, so I figured I was in luck. Tammy was sending me reports of a ferry cancellation and a couple of canceled flights on a different float plane service, but there weren’t any cancellations on West Coast Air.

My afternoon meeting wrapped up a little early, so I took my leave and headed down to the docks, with the intent of perhaps catching an earlier flight home. Well, when I got there, it was a zoo. I suspected that things weren’t going to be going as planned. I walked up to the counter and was informed that at 3:15, the 2:00 flight was just leaving, was full, and was going to be the last flight of the day. My flight was canceled. The woman at the counter looked up the BC Ferries status, and they were sailing again, so I asked her advice on getting to the ferry terminal.

So I hopped on the airline shuttle and rode to the Waterfront SkyTrain station. Four stops later, I got off at the Main Street station, and found the Pacific Coach Lines terminal. I found that the next bus to the ferry wasn’t until 5:30, but I didn’t really have a choice so I bought my ticket. I wandered around for a while, and checked out some of the stuff in the atrium of Science World, then headed back to the station to wait for my bus. The bus took me straight onto the 7 o’clock ferry (running late due to the weather, of course), and then Tammy, Miranda and Ian picked me up from the terminal just before 9. We got home just before 10.

A bit of an adventure, eh?

  1. ‘Missed your comment yesterday. It sounds like a day to record in your memoirs!! ‘Glad you got home safely. Dad says you should have got a taxi from the shuttle dock to the ferry terminal and charged it to the company. The picture of the day reminds me of when you and Stephanie used to get the kitchen chairs into the bedroom, drape an old bedspread over them and the bed to make a tent. You probably don’t remember.
BY THE WAY….NOTICE TO ALL – DAD HAS TO GO IN TO HAVE ANOTHER BIOPSY AT THE MONTH END SO PLEASE DO NOT COME ROUND TO VISIT IF YOU OR ANY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY OR RECENTLY VISITED FRIENDS HAVE BEEN SICK. Both of our systems are really low right now after this flu/cold we have just had.

  2. Yeah, I agree with Dad, I should have got the taxi. I guess I wasn’t thinking clearly. The only thing that was surprising was that I had to wait for the bus. I figure I must have missed the previous one by only a couple of minutes. Too bad. Now I’ll have stories to tell of being stranded in Vancouver… 😉

I’m having trouble shaking the tail end of whatever it was I had. I figured I’d turned the corner, but on Monday I got a frog in my throat, and now it’s turned into a persistent, annoying cough.
