About two weeks ago, we had our first warning that the garage door opener was failing. It was cold, and when we went to open the door, it rose about a foot and a half, then stopped. With a helping hand, it went all the way and then worked fine.
Today, when Tammy and Miranda came home from going to the Bottle Depot and shopping, I was in the living room and hear the sound of the door opener, followed by a grinding sound then silence.
I investigated and found that the big gear inside that drives the worm gear was shredded.
Apparently, this is a major wear item for openers. I headed out to Home Depot, and got a replacement opener kit. Since all of the wires and chain was installed, my job was pretty easy: replace the unit, the wall switch and the remote keyless entry.
Amazingly enough, I did it. We now have two clickers for the car along with a two year warranty.
